When it was officially announced, the Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic fan series’ first episode was confirmed to be released in October. Obviously, that hasn’t happened, and the Unreal Cinema team is ready to start talking about why that is and what happens next. In its latest video, Unreal Cinema cites the announcement of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake from Aspyr Media as the main reason for the first episode’s delay, as well as several other reasons that are left vague.

The idea is that, since the Knights of the Old Republic fan show is trying to stay in Lucasfilm’s good graces, Unreal Cinema has to play by its rules. While Unreal Cinema doesn’t explicitly state that it’s delaying the show to allow Lucasfilm room for its Knights of the Old Republic announcements, it’s implied. As such, Unreal Cinema is delaying its first episode of Knights of the Old Republic until an as-yet-unannounced date. In the meantime, it has something else in store.
If Unreal Cinema can’t release its Knights of the Old Republic show at the moment, then it’s going to do something else. In the next few weeks, Unreal Cinema will instead release a side project named Malak: An Old Republic Story. Malak will be the first of several anthology-style stories focusing on individual characters from Knights of the Old Republic. Unreal Cinema describes these shorts as “previously unseen moments” from Knights of the Old Republic’s history.
The implication is that, since the short is named Malak and not Knights of the Old Republic, it’s fine for Unreal Cinema to release its short video now while it’s unable to release a Knights of the Old Republic episode. It seems like a silly situation, but it’s really a miracle the fan-made show is being allowed at all so Unreal Cinema is likely counting its blessings.
Expect continued updates from Unreal Cinema over the coming weeks as it moves closer to the release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s first episode. The Malak short animated story will arrive before long, in the meantime.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is in development for PC and PS5.
