There have been major sequence breaks discovered shortly after release, many of which Metroid Dread’s speedrunning community have been using to great effect. Many of these shortcuts were intentionally designed, with many of them accessible as soon as a player obtains Samus’ Varia Suit. One of the most well-known intended sequence breaks is one that can be used on a boss in Cataris, Kraid, where Morph Bombs can reveal a chute that can bomb a wound in his stomach that instantly kills him. However, fans have discovered yet another secret method to quickly kill this boss.

A Japanese fan known as yassu_yassu on Twitter, posted that a strategy guide written by Famitsu contained a certain quick-kill method for Kraid. This involved exploring off of the game’s intended path, where instead of going straight to the boss, they went to the other locations in Metroid Dread, obtaining the Super Missiles and Flash Shift. Once these items are collected, a player can go back and fight Kraid, fighting the boss normally up until its second phase.
Once the floor falls apart to Kraid’s second phase, a player can use the Grapple Beam to zip up to the Spider Magnet platform in the top-left portion of the arena. They then demonstrated that when Kraid’s eyes flash red, they then used the Flash Shift to zoom over to Kraid’s mouth, triggering a unique cinematic where Samus lifts open his entire jaw wide. This allows a player to bombard Kraid using Super Missiles, which deals an incredible amount of damage.
This shows that there are many secrets that are waiting to be discovered within Metroid Dread. It also shows how the developers knew that fans and speedrunners were going to try and beat the game out of order, and added special context-sensitive cinematics for accomplishing it. There’s potentially even more that MercurySteam programmed into the game that have yet to be discovered.
Metroid Dread is available now for Nintendo Switch.
