The community, called Cotino, will be the first neighborhood created as part of the new real estate sector ‘Storyliving by Disney.’ A press release from Disney said there are plans to develop additional locations in the future.
Rancho Mirage, in the Coachella Valley, is located east of Los Angeles and extends approximately 45 miles through the Colorado Desert. Walt Disney and his wife Lillian once owned a home in Rancho Mirage.
The residential community will be located about two hours away from Disneyland in Anaheim.
After opening Disneyland in July 1955, Walt Disney dreamed up a plan for a futuristic city that would bring the magic of Disney to residents’ everyday lives. The concept was called the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” but he died before the community could be built.
The prototype community included a monorail system that would eliminate ground traffic and noise as well as a climate-controlled city center.
“As we prepare to enter our second century, we are developing new and exciting ways to bring the magic of Disney to people wherever they are, expanding storytelling to storyliving,” Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products said. “We can’t wait to welcome residents to these beautiful and unique Disney communities where they can live their lives to the fullest.”
Disney released digital renderings of the community plan which showed a colorful community surrounding a turquoise body of water and a backdrop of the Santa Ana mountain range.
In a statement, Disney announced that while the neighborhoods will accommodate people of all ages, there will also be a 55 and older community. The community will feature a stylish waterfront clubhouse that offers activities for residents.
Trained Disney cast members will work in the clubhouse and will also provide curated experiences for members. These experiences include things such as educational seminars, cooking classes, live performances, and wellness programs.
In collaboration with developers and homebuilders, Disney Imagineers are designing beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces that engage and entertain residents. The architecture theme will be inspired by the valley region.
The community will include about 1,900 housing units including estates, single-family homes, and condominiums. There are also plans to build a waterfront hotel and entertainment center full of dining and shopping options.
The entire property will surround the 24-acre grand oasis which utilizes specialty technology to keep the water clear and turquoise.
Disney will be working with DMB Development, a developer based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The company will also be teaming up with a third party to build and sell the homes.
“A portion of the oasis will include a professionally managed beach park with recreational water activities that can be accessed by the public through the purchase of a day pass,” Disney said in a statement Wednesday.
“The result? A place to discover new passions and new beginnings. A place where charming gathering spots foster new friendship. Where nature intersects with human curiosity. And where each day is a new chapter in the most exciting story yet to be written… yours.”
