Following the tease today, Fallout: New Vegas developers Obsidian Entertainment, tweeted out “How do you let someone down easily? Asking for a friend,” capping it off with the simple hashtag #ItsNotUs. While the tweet has no direct reference to Fallout or Bethesda, the timing of the tweet would indicate that Obsidian was not involved with any new Fallout title.

After the success of Fallout 3 and with most of their development team working hard on Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at the time, Bethesda reached out to studio Obsidian to develop what became Fallout: New Vegas. The title was released in 2010 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, and received much praise from critics and fans. The title is still so beloved that some fans are attempting to recreate the game using mods in Fallout 4.

For their part, Obsidian has always wanted to make another Fallout title. Several months ago, Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer spoke about his desire to make a new game in the series, making it easy to see why the announcement of another Fallout title without Obsidian might come as somewhat of a let down to the studio. “I would certainly love to work on a Fallout game again.” said Sawyer, “I know there are tons of people at Obsidian who would love to work on a Fallout game again. If we were given the chance, we would certainly love to.”

All of this still leaves us the question of what the new tease actually is. A new reveal relating to Fallout was about the last thing anyone was expecting, with most holding out hope Bethesda might finally grace us with the long-rumored space RPG Starfield. With E3 just around the corner, whatever new Fallout content is headed fans way won’t be a secret much longer and the acclaimed studio is sure to deliver something interesting.

Whatever Bethesda is planning for Fallout, it’s likely that more details will surface over the coming days before E3.
