How a New PTR Server Benefits Fallout 76

Bethesda released the original Fallout 76 public test realm for the Bethesda launcher last year and since then, fans of the live service Fallout title have been able to test content ahead of its release. Like with many other live service games that use PTRs, Fallout 76 has improved since the feature was added, which may suggest that the fans’ voices are being listened to. The new Steam PTR may further help Bethesda optimize Fallout 76 with content beyond the release of the upcoming Expeditions: The Pitt update.

How to Access Fallout 76’s Steam PTR Server

Fallout 76 fans on Steam will now have access to the PTR through their libraries, with the Test Realm appearing underneath the standard client of the game. Early Fallout 76 PTR players will have immediate access to the current seasonal event known as Invaders from Beyond and a new Public Event called Test Your Metal. The new event will task Fallout 76 players with surviving three agitated robots for the Brotherhood of Steel in anticipation of Fallout 76’s Expeditions: The Pitt update which is expected to release later this year.

Invaders from Beyond makes Fallout 76’s Appalachia more apocalyptic as an alien mother ship will spawn at a random location every hour to deploy Brainwave Siphons. Fallout 76 players will have to defeat several aliens and an alien commander in order to break the Brainwave Siphons’ shields and repel the advances of the mother ship. Fallout 76 PTR players who complete this seasonal event will receive loot, experience points, and crafting plans for new alien weaponry and CAMP objects.

The Fallout 76 PTR includes a streamlined bug report option so that fans enjoying the seasonal content ahead of time can ensure that it’s optimal for players when it officially releases to the normal client. Just like standard Fallout 76 client updates, each PTR update includes an assortment of bug fixes of its own that will allow fans of the live game to see if one of their issues will be fixed in the near future. It’s currently unclear if Bethesda intends to expand the public test offerings to consoles or not, but PC players now have the choice between the official launcher and Valve’s Steam client.

Fallout 76 is available right now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
