That’s because, for all of Fallout 4’s great accomplishments and seemingly endless content, actually surviving a post-apocalyptic wasteland is surprisingly easy when players are just a quicksave away from restarting moments before it all went wrong. Fallout 4’s Survival mode is the answer for those looking for an added challenge, as the mode will disable most save features, requiring players to find a bed and sleep for at least an hour in order to record their progress.

Survival mode also features no fast travel, weighted ammo that now takes up inventory space as a result, and a wellness/sickness system that will have players managing their upset stomachs as often as they have to survive sudden Ghoul attacks. It’s the kind of set-up that should appeal to those fans who want as much realism in their games as possible - at least, as much realism as there can be in a world where androids roam freely and gigantic, radioactive scorpions are a viable dinner choice.

The release of Survival mode, if it follows shortly after the testing period, will also work in conjunction with the Fallout 4 Automatron DLC that launched yesterday. Gamers will have a chance to explore the new DLC using the same gameplay methods they tackled the entire Boston Commonwealth win during the launch content, and then decide if it would be more fun attempting to take down the Mechanist while also managing their Vault Dweller’s sleep schedule. Fun!

While Survival mode might just seem like an overly complex change to difficult at first glance, all of the changes combined should fundamentally change the way gamers approach Fallout 4. For instance, it seems likely that having a companion like the award-winning Dogmeat would be even wiser than it has been in the past, since enemies deal much more damage and saving is now a luxury rather than a crutch.
