While Fallout 4 was praised when it launched in 2015, some may feel that the series has deviated significantly from its late 90s roots. However, it does feature one of the best Bethesda step-out moments in the guise of a seemingly wholesome family life torn apart by nuclear war. Players begin in their idyllic home with their loving partner and newborn son, Shaun. However, the threat of incoming atomic bombs sends the protagonist and their surrounding neighbors fleeing for a nearby underground vault, mere moments before the sky is filled with a terrifying mushroom cloud.

It’s a notable introduction, but one person felt it needed a dose of realism. As spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user Unreal Septim has released “More Realistic Intro,” a mod for Fallout 4 that tweaks the opening sequence. Essentially, once players start a new game, the beginning will play out as normal. However, within a few minutes, just as the newscaster makes the announcement about the incoming nuclear threat, the bombs go off before anyone has a chance to get to Vault 111, obliterating Sanctuary Hills and all who inhabit it, including the player. And then the game ends.
It’s a pretty interesting mod, even if it means that the game only lasts for about five minutes. Vaults are one of Fallout’s most famous assets, and most fans probably take it for granted that their character will be one of the few remaining survivors in a devastated world. However, Unreal Septim ensures that players don’t even get to see the inside of one of these safe dwellings, which some would say makes the game a little bit more realistic, if brief.
There are plenty of mods for Fallout 4 that make for a better survival experience, but “More Realistic Intro” seems to do the opposite by ensuring the total annihilation of everyone right at the start. It means players don’t get to fully take on the role of the Sole Survivor, which is an ironic name anyway with this mod installed.
Fallout 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
